Product Engineer

Brilliant

About Brilliant

Brilliant is a tight-knit team of scientists, educators, engineers, designers, storytellers, and illustrators who are redesigning education at scale.

We believe that math and science are fascinating and beautiful, but that the tools widely used to teach it are dry and ineffective. Brilliant makes learning STEM fun, through problem solving and interactive explorations – from foundational math and science to cutting-edge computer science and professional topics.

Brilliant helps over 12 million students, professionals, and lifelong learners around the world cultivate problem solving skills, build intuition, and master concepts rather than memorize them. To understand more about our approach, see our learning principles.

Application Note

We're always excited to welcome and encourage anyone from non-traditional backgrounds to apply, so please, don't sweat the requirements lists too much! It's important to note that including a cover letter which details your interest in Brilliant and why you feel you'd be a great fit for this position will be required to be considered.

The Role

We are a team of fun, motivated, and experienced entrepreneurs who are working to make a huge impact in education. As a Fullstack engineer on our team, you'll build the technology that enables an entirely new way of teaching STEM to a broad range of students.

Product areas at Brilliant are organized into cross-disciplinary pods. You'll start out on our Platform pod contributing to our tech stack modernization projects. As you gain more experience and product context, you may stay on Platform -- where you'll continue to focus on our technical foundations and developer tooling -- or move to a product pod such as Authoring Tools, Game Mechanics, Growth, Learning Experience & Interactives or User Motivation Systems.

Interactive education is in its infancy; we have really only scratched the surface of what is possible with computer-based pedagogy. Our work helps people across Brilliant teach topics from vector calculus to neural networks in an interactive way. Come build the future of interactive learning with us!

Reponsibilities

    • Contribute to the on-going modernization of our technical stack by converting product features to GraphQL and React.
    • Proactively ask for help and build your own onboarding path. Gather context on the product, business, and industry.
    • Exercise a high degree of autonomy on a team that trusts you to do what's right for our users but is there to support you when you need it.
    • Contribute to code review — as both a learning mechanism for getting familiar with our technical systems and an opportunity to improve your colleagues’ code.
    • Frequently ask: How does this impact our learners?

Who are you?

    • This isn’t your first job, but it might be your first software engineering job.
    • There’s at least one programming language, framework, or part of the modern web development stack where you feel comfortable and proficient. You’re excited to learn more.
    • You got into programming because you’re motivated by solving users’ problems.
    • You’re comfortable shipping something that’s “good enough” — and you proactively seek context that helps you understand what “good enough” means for a given feature.
    • You’re mindful of the big picture from both a technical perspective and a business one. You care about "building the right thing" and "building the thing right”.
    • You're excited to collaborate closely with talented engineers. You enjoy solving problems as a team, pair-programming, and sharing knowledge.
    • You enjoy thinking through problems at a high level and exploring possible solutions. You frequently ask “why”.

Salary

    • We use a systematic compensation framework. Salary scales are set each year for each job vertical, based on market data and company budget. Independently, managers level folks on their team, and those levels are mapped formulaically to our compensation scales.
    • Additional, we always make First and Best Offers - there is no negotiation (for new hires nor our existing teammates). This ensures that people are paid based on their expected contribution, rather than their negotiation skills.
    • In San Francisco, NYC, and similar markets, the range for this role across the most likely levels for relevant candidates is $115-155k.
    • We do apply a location-based adjustment in less competitive markets, typically 5-10%. Feel free to ask us about your particular location!
