The advertising technology team is responsible for building and maintaining the systems that monetise our website, allowing our content to be enjoyed for free around the world. 

You will be joining a multi talented and deeply experienced group of developers who look after real time metrics systems, advertising configuration servers, data science models, and front end frameworks to name just a few. Based in both Bath, UK and Grenoble, France the team sits inside the larger global Technology & Engineering group which supports all technology aspects of the business.

Job Purpose

As a Junior Developer you will be helping to support our day to day operations, squashing bugs and adding new features to our front end advertising framework which manages advertisements on all of Future’s core websites. 

The vast array of sites that we support and the ever changing needs of the business means we need your help to ensure that our system is working optimally and is fit for purpose. As the framework is written in JavaScript/TypeScript that is what the majority of your initial work will consist of. You will be reporting into the Technology Lead who will work closely with you to scope out work and ensure you have everything you need to begin contributing to the company’s success as soon as possible.

As you grow in the role you will work with senior developers and technology leads to make sure our code achieves the highest professional standards. This will involve automated testing, code linting, team design sessions, code reviews, static analysis, and system performance analysis and optimisation. We hope that we can help you mature as a developer which you will repay in kind by taking your part in the ownership of our code quality and professionalism.

Key Responsibilities 

• Maintenance and enhancement of our front end advertising management framework.

• With the help of the team you will ensure that your code is well scoped, fit for purpose, readable, and testable.

• Debugging of advertising related issues and solution planning.

• Management, tracking, and reporting of your work through ticketing systems.

• Supported/guided self education on the systems involved in delivering advertisements to our websites so that you are properly equipped to support the business.

• Participating in team discussions and daily standups to update the team on your progress and any ideas you want to discuss/share.

• Growing with us to best support each other and the success of the business.

What do I need to succeed?

Essential skills and experience

• You have development experience and are excited about developing your front end skill set (JavaScript/TypeScript, Node, HTML5, CSS3).

• You have used version control systems, ideally Git.

• You understand how the HTML/CSS/JavaScript assets of a web page are delivered and how they work together to provide an experience to a user.

• You have a basic understanding of how you would go about debugging JavaScript issues in a browser.

• You have a basic understanding of unit testing and the benefits it provides.

• You are comfortable working within a team, you will have a lot of questions and the experience your team members can share with you will be invaluable.

• You are able to work on a Mac or are willing to learn.

Desirable skills and experience

• Experience with JavaScript frameworks (React, Angular, etc)

• Experience with Node.js

• Experience with browser development tools

• Have some projects of your own you can share and talk us through
